Profile of Sessional Workers

Burmese Settlement Service Worker
(Fri 9:30am - 4:30pm)

The Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA) under its Community Settlement Scheme (CSS) has funded the Burmese worker. DIMA has funded the Baulkham Hills Holroyd Parramatta Migrant Resource Centre to continue to employ a worker from 1st October 2000 to 30th September 2001 to assist recently arrived migrants and refugees from Burma to settle in Australia. The project has a Sydney wide focus based in Parramatta for two days and outreaching in Auburn Migrant Resource Centre for one day. The prime objective for the project is to provide settlement information and support to Burmese clients in response to their identified settlement needs.

Chinese Settlement Service Worker - Pinkie Leung
(Wed 9:00am to 1:00pm)

The project is Funded by DIMA, and has been established to assist with the settlement of the Chinese community in the Western Sydney Area. The aims of the project are to assist with the settlement of the Chinese community in the Western Sydney area, to assist newly arrived migrants of Chinese background to have access to community services and information and to develop programs to meet the identified needs of the Chinese community.

Casework for Chinese youth is provided on Tuesdays at the Australian Chinese Community Association (ACCA) at Granville (by appointment). Tel: (02) 9637 9913.

Ethiopian Settlement Service Worker - Berhane Gebregziabhe
(Wed 9:00am to 1:00pm)

The Ethiopian worker based at Liverpool MRC provides settlement services to the Ethiopian speaking community once a week at AMRC. The worker can assist with information and referral to government and non government organisations, provide advocacy for the newly arrived refugees and migrants of Ethiopian background and deliver a settlement service to help newly arrived Ethiopian speakers settle in Australia with more ease.

Iraqi Settlement Services Worker - Atef Hamie
(Wed 9.00am - 4.30pm)

Atef Hamie assists the Iraqi Community and other Arabic Speaking Refugees. Services provided through this project consists of Case Work; providing face to face services, Community Development which includes identifying issues, problems and settlement needs and bringing these to the attention of appropriate service providers. Cross-cultural community information sessions are organised to raise awareness of mainstream services to the cultural needs and issues of the target group. Information sessions are organised for the target group with the view of raising their awareness to mainstream services. Case Management is provided to assist new refugees with initial settlement needs such as accommodation, material assistance, registration etc.

Muslim Women's Association Worker - Wafa Zaim
(Wed 2.30 pm - 4.30 pm)

The Muslim Women's Association is a community based welfare organisation established in 1983 to cater to the welfare, social, educational, religious and recreational needs of Muslim women of all backgrounds and ages. The association was formed in response to the deeply felt need that issues concerning the settlement and general development of Muslim women are being seriously neglected. The association based at 47 Wangee Rd. Lakemba provides outreach services from Auburn MRC and Liverpool MRC.

Bosnian Welfare Centre Worker - Lejla Sedlarevic
(Thurs 9.00am - 5.00pm)

Lejla provides face to face case work services for Bosnian refugees assisting with their settlement needs. The worker participates in community development raising community awareness of issues concerning clients and bringing problems faced by clients to the attention of appropriate service providers. Lejla is the convenor of the Bosnian Interagency and co - ordinates the publication of the Bosnian magazine ' Zena 21'.

Somali Settlement Services Worker (Female) - Ifrah Ibrahim
(Mon 9.00am - 5.00pm)

The Somali Settlement Services Worker assists Somali clients with their setlement needs. The project gives special priority to female clients who because of cultural and religious reasons may wish to see a female. Issues, problems and settlement needs of the target group are identified by the worker and appropriate referrals are made. Information sessions on a range of topics and services are organised for the group to raise awareness.

The Somali Settlement Services worker, based at the Baulkhum Hills Holroyd Parramatta MRC provides casework and referral for newly arrived Somali families and individuals. Assistance is given in relation to settlement issues such as housing, employment, income, health, immigration, education and training and job searching.
